7 Questions to Ask Before Buying an AI Agent
Autonomous AI is powerful. It's also dangerous if deployed without governance. Use this checklist to evaluate any AI agent vendor — including Velin.
If the answer is "our cloud" or "our servers," you're renting your own business processes from a vendor who can turn them off. Your data, prompts, logs, and outputs should stay on infrastructure you control.
Ask for a live demo of the kill switch. Not a "we can pause it" — a real, instant, password-protected halt of the entire system. If they can't show you, they don't have one.
An agent that checks its own work is a student grading their own exam. The verifier must be independent — different agent, different reporting line, different incentives. This is ISO 19011 audit principles applied to AI.
Every action the agent takes should be logged: who initiated it, what was the input, what was the output, what was the reasoning. If you can't read the journal and trace any decision end-to-end, you have no traceability.
What the audit trail should include
- Timestamp and agent identity for every action
- Input data and prompt used
- Output delivered and verification result
- Human approval or rejection with reasoning
- Rollback / undo capability for reversible actions
Any action that leaves the system (sending an email, posting publicly, transferring money, modifying production code) must require explicit human approval. Not "the agent decided it was fine" — a human typed GO.
The license fee is the small number. The real cost is infrastructure (VPS, cloud), model API calls (per-token pricing adds up fast), and your team's time to maintain it. Ask for the total monthly operating cost at full scale, not the entry price.
Cost questions to ask
- Monthly model API cost at full deployment (not trial)
- Infrastructure requirements (CPU, RAM, storage)
- What's included in the monthly fee vs. billed separately
- Cost to switch vendors or self-host if the relationship ends
The strongest signal of trust is dogfooding. Is the vendor running their own company on this system? Can you see the live dashboard? Or is it a demo with no real workload behind it?
